Here's what you missed...

We discussed how a name can define, confine or refine us.

But...the name we are given through Christ, is the ultimate Blessing. How crucial it can be to be known. How Blessed we are to be Known.

Watched: Bible Roundtable: Episode 1 and discussed points of interest.

Here are a few we highlighted:

  • the diversity of the actors to make them relatable and focus on the individual's 'encounter' with Jesus

  • the intent was to make the story line plausible

  • the historical and false view of Mary Magdalene as a prostitute

  • "possession" is when one loses all 'free will'

  • Mary was "possessed by demons" possibly due to trauma

  • "a lack of wholeness is like a vacuum for illness"
  • "a lack of wholeness is like a vacuum for illness"

  • Nicodemus reached for 'things' to cast out demons rather than turning to 'prayer and fasting'

  • original concern about Jesus being in a "bar" came to the 'plausible' conclusion, there were places to gather and share stories, wine was a common...(go to the ocean to find fish?)

  • Jesus called Mary by her true name and took 'ownership' of her by proclaiming "You are mine".

  • There is a connection between identity and destiny. "A person's name reveals their soul."

The Chosen Season #1 Episode #2 “Shabbat"

Introduction:

All too often we forget that Jesus was born into and raised in the traditional Jewish culture of the 1st Century. He certainly would have observed the Sabbath.

Shabbat is the way Jews say “Sabbath”. For Jews this is from sundown

on Friday to sundown on Saturday. Shabbat begins with the Sabbath meal on Friday evening in Jewish homes. No work is to be done on the Sabbath.

Discussion and Learning:

How did Jesus worship God as a young adult Jewish man? Find out in this episode as we see Nicodemus pursue the woman who was miraculously healed after his failure.

We meet two disciples of Jesus in this episode, at the Shabbat dinner at Mary’s home. James and Thaddeus.

These are two disciples about whom almost nothing is known – this James is not “James, the brother of John” (we’ll meet him later).

This James is presumably “James, the son of Alphaeus”, although that is not clear in the movie.

Thaddeus is mentioned in Mark 3 and Matthew 10, but he’s replaced by “Judas, the son of James” in Luke’s list of disciples – these are likely the same guy, called by a different name.

All of the Jews observe the weekly Shabbat dinner, which features a surprise visitor to Mary’s house!

Additional questions we may discuss together in group

Do you think the directors intended to include a nod to Judas Iscariot as they portrayed Simon leaving his home quickly after Shabbat dinner?

Why or why not?

What did you notice about the various (as many as six, if you can find them) different Shabbat meals that we saw depicted in this episode?

Did you catch Jesus winking at Barnaby???

How did the directors work in some of the biblical stories that we read earlier, transporting the ideas found there into a new location or setting?

Were there other allusions that you noticed?

Much of what we see in this episode is a continuation of

Episode #1, fleshing out backstories before the series will surge ahead.

What have you appreciated about the backstories as

they continue to flesh out in the movie?

Is there anything you’d change, given what you’ve seen so far?

How did Jesus appear to you?

Like you thought?

Different?

What will you take home with you and ponder further?
